“Having spent the major part of my working life as a designer for printed and woven textiles,I find pattern, colour and texture still remain the driving force in my paintings
From roadways, beaches, landscape to trees, skylines and the clear night skies, from the graphic vistas of Arizona in the USA to the undulating countryside around St.Maurice in S.W.France where I now live…….everywhere there are movements, rhythms and lines which captivate my imagination
I try to express them on canvas and paper from my particular viewpoint.I sketch, draw and photograph and observe ‘in situ’ but complete all work in my studio at home.I have always experimented with materials and use all manner of media and techniques from watercolours and gold leaf to oils, charcoal, gouache or collage. Each has its own role in expressing the movement and essential moods of what I have seen.
Once triggered,an idea can remain with me and may be sifted and filtered many times in my head before it arrives as a finished work. This may take hours, weeks or even years. Sometimes,I work in series /groups until satisfied enough to sign and date each individual piece.
Above all – I hope my works will be enjoyed by all who see them,”
